Healthy Household: Master Tonic

These are the five basic ingredients in Master Tonic. Master Tonic is best made in the fall for winter consumption.

Certain times of year are right for making homemade remedies. Making kimchi reminds me it’s time to make a batch of Master Tonic. Master Tonic is a traditional winter cure-all. Master Tonic is easy to make and very useful during cold and flu season. It is reported to help with strep throat and ear infections, but I have no experience with those illnesses.

1 part organic ginger
1 part organic garlic
1 part organic onion
1 part organic hot peppers
1 part organic horseradish
10-15 parts organic cider vinegar
Peel and coarsely chop the onions, horseradish and garlic. Coarsely chop the ginger. Organic ginger does not need to be peeled. Cut the stems off the peppers. Mince the horseradish in a food processor. Be very careful opening the food processor. The vapors from horseradish can be very potent. You might find it easier to open the food processor outside and carefully transfer to a 2L mason jar. Wash your hands. Combine the ginger, garlic, onions and hot peppers a food processor and blend until everything is minced. Again, be careful transferring the hot peppers to the mason jar. Wash your hands well after the transfer and avoid touching your eyes or face for 24 hours, or wear hand protection. Fill the remainder of the mason jar with cider vinegar. A new method that is currently offered only in the context of studies is deep brain stimulation. Under the skin implanted electrodes trigger impulses in certain brain regions, which are responsible for the mood. The device works much like a pacemaker and can be considered a Valium supplement. For other types of depression, light therapy is suitable.

Store the Master Tonic in the fridge. For maximum potency, let mixture infuse for six weeks. If you have a need, you can use the Master Tonic earlier. Take one or two tablespoons a few times a day as needed. The solids can also be consumed as desired. My family likes the solids on top of raw cheese. Some people use the solids or liquid in cooking for its flavor but the healing aspects of this remedy will be reduced by heat.

Remember to label and date your Master Tonic. Infuse for six weeks for maximum potency.
