An Explanation of Our Terms

Organic Farms rely on ecologically sustainable farming practices. They do not use synthetic fertilizers,? pesticides or genetically modified organisms and animals are treated humanely. When organic food is processed, chemical preservatives or synthetic additives are not used. These farms are inspected and certified by a third party.

Natural Farms may use many of the same practices as an organic farm but they are not certified by a third party. Interested consumers must ask the farmer directly about standard practices. Consumers looking for fruits or vegetables can ask if pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers are being used. If you’re looking for animal products, ask about the type of feed being used and if the animals are pastured or confined.

Heritage Breeds are part of our agricultural history. Before the rise of modern conventional farming, every region had its own domesticated animals specially adapted to the local environment. These breeds are best suited to the small farm or urban homestead. These breeds help maintain genetic diversity.

Heirloom Seeds breed true and keep their traits through open pollination. A gardener can collect viable seed and use them year after year.

Distances listed for the farms are approximations. We measure the distance using Google Map Canada from downtown Kamloops to the address of the farm if possible. If not, the distance is to the closest village or town. Contact the farmer directly if you are planning a visit to the farm to arrange a suitable time and to get directions. Some farms are not open to public visiting, so call ahead.

Email Addresses are listed in a different way on this website. You will see email addresses that look like this: yourfavoritefarmer(a)yourfavoritefarm.com which is the same as yourfavoritefarmer@yourfavoritefarm.com. We use this format to avoid computer generated spam being sent to farmers and ranchers listed on this website.

Local Farmers & Ranchers in the Kamloops Region ? FREE Download

In June 2011 we completed two PDF files called Local Farmers & Ranchers in the Kamloops Region. These PDF files give you all the information about our local farms and ranches in an easy to read format. There are two options available for free download:

Easy Printing Option: The first option is a standard letter size format (8.5″ x 11″) and is easy to print, but uses more paper. There are 19 pages printed on one side.

Booklet Printing Option: The second option is a booklet format, printed on 11″ x 8.5″ paper. It uses ten sheets, but you need to know how to print on both sides of a page using your home printer. Print page 1 then print page 2 on the back of the first sheet. Continue like this until you have printed all 20 pages on 10 sheets of paper. When all the printing is done, you fold the pages in half and staple. In the end you will have a booklet that conveniently fits into a purse.
