This homemade broth powder is a good camping or travel food. Adding some healthy fats to the broth will make this drink very nourishing and sustaining.

“Nutritional yeast is an excellent natural source of B complex vitamins (except for B12) plus a variety of minerals. Look for yeast that has been processed at low temperatures.”
Weston A Price Foundation: Guide to Superfoods

Commercial broth powders, bouillon granules or cubes are filled with some very questionable ingredients. These ersatz foods are among some of the worst industrial foods available. Making your own broth powder is a easy way to say “No!” to a boatload of food additives while still having access to a convenience food. With homemade broth, no one has to pay for convenience with their health.

This homemade broth powder is a good travel food. The powder can be used by itself in hot water or with bone broth. A cup of broth is tasty with 1-3 teaspoons of coconut oil, creamed coconut or butter. Add some extra nutritional yeast or fermented miso, if desired.

1c organic shiitake mushroom powder
1-2T sea salt
1-2T organic sage, finely ground
1-2T organic nutritional yeast, finely ground
1-2T wildcrafted dulse, finely ground (optional)
1 organic birdeye pepper, finely ground (optional)

In a spice grinder, finely grind the sea salt, sage, nutritional yeast, dulse and hot pepper into a very fine powder. In a bowl add the mixture to the shiitake mushroom powder and mix very well. Use 1-2 tablespoons of powder for each 2-3 cups of hot water. Adding some healthy fats to the broth will make the broth very nourishing and sustaining.

Pass on Supplements and Eat Real Food

Let real food be your medicine and skip the supplements! It’s cheaper too!

Pass on the cost of supplementing with Coemzyme Q10, and eat beef heart!

I just made some marinated beef heart based on a recipe from Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. It was delicious! I like heart with onions saut?ed in butter or pastured lard. I cook the onions first then quickly cook the heart, a little more than I would cook liver. The heart went nicely with garden fresh zucchini saut?ed in butter.

Marinated Heart
1/4c organic cider vinegar
1/4c organic extra-virgin olive oil
1tsp sea salt
1 bird’s eye chili pepper
1/2tsp organic whole cumin, ground
1 pastured beef heart

Carefully clean the heart and then cut it into four pieces. Remove any connective tissue and fat. (I gave the fat to the hens which are at their peak egg production. They need the fat more than I do!) Thinly slice the heart and marinate overnight.

Organ meats are a superfood. Try to eat organ meats one or twice a week.

Vanilla Colostrum Shake

colostrum-shake

A Vanilla Colostrum Shake is a delicious superfood that everyone will enjoy.

Colostrum is the first milk of any lactating animal. For cows, the first five milkings are considered colostrum.

Colostrum is a superfood. It is becoming the new “must have” supplement, especially for athletes and people interested in life extension. You can find colostrum in dried powder or in capsule form, but the best way to consume colostrum is fresh from a cow in your local area.

Colostrum from a local cow is better because the cow is making immune factors for the local environment. Traditionally, when a cow gave birth, the whole family would be lined up and everyone would get an equal share of this precious food. Even though this food was available only once a year, the family’s immunity would be positively affected all year round.

If you would like to learn more about the health benefits of colostrum please read Cooking with Colostrum.

1c ice from filtered water
3c raw colostrum
2 raw pastured egg yolks
1T local raw honey
1tsp organic vanilla extract (optional)

Many people that are new to colostrum find its taste unusual. This recipe will help make colostrum delicious, even for children. In a food processor, chop up the ice into fine pieces. Add the colostrum, egg yolks, honey and vanilla extract and blend until creamy smooth. Make sure that there is lots of room in the food processor because the shake will foam up two to three times its original volume.
